Creating ebooks is easy and nowadays anyone who is capable of sending an email can easily make one.

Ebooks (short for ‘electronic book’) are a very common format used to distribute information over the internet. The majority of sales are currently in the non-fiction genre, but this will evolve as technology improves the digital reading experience.

When it comes to creating ebooks, non-fiction ebooks are typically 15+ pages in length and designed to be read on a computer monitor or portable ebook reader. While its content can appear visually similar to a traditional book’s layout, the ebook format supports the integration of high quality audio and/or video to enhance the reading experience. It also offers the option to link to other sections of the book or to external web pages from within the text itself.

The ability to link to internet sites means you can easily reference supporting content that exists online. For example, instead of creating a glossary of definitions, you could simply link to the definition of the word on Wikipedia.com. When the reader clicks on the word, their internet browser opens to that exact web page. Carefully selected links which are likely to remain active indefinitely can add long-term value to your product.

When creating ebooks, keep in mind that links to external internet sites can also generate revenue. Many products sold online now offer a referral program, often called an Affiliate Program. As an affiliate, you earn a commission on every purchase made through your referral. If an ebook is successful, this has the potential to become a significant source of income.

Disadvantages

Because they are so easy to create, poor quality ebooks have saturated the market in some subject areas. That is not to say that high quality information in this format won’t sell, but having written an ebook does not hold the credibility it once did. A lot of publishers are creating ebooks to create interest and buzz for a later released hard copy.

Formatting

While ebooks can be specifically formatted for the various readers on the market, PDF is most commonly used because it allows for the document to appear the same on all computers, regardless of operating system (Mac/PC/Linux). Don’t forget to choose the right document security properties to protect your content.

Pricing

Ebook prices vary widely based on the quality, quantity, and rarity of the information. The average price point is $20-$30 but it also depends on the creator’s approach to marketing. Ebooks with affiliate product links commonly sell for less or are given away for free, with the authors hoping make it up on the back end through affiliate commissions.

Sales Outlets

You can make money creating ebooks by selling them via:

• Your own website
• A variety of online ebook retailers
• Your own affiliate program

You can also sell the master rights to your book and/or offer the ability for someone else to include their own personalized affiliate links in the content.
