1. Amazon.com

Amazon's Bestsellers List highlights the most popular items from each category on Amazon.com. This is a great place to spot emerging trends and see what people are actually their spending money on.

2. eBay Pulse

eBay Pulse highlights trends, hot picks, cool stuff and popular searches on eBay. For some niches, this can be an ideal report on what people are looking for and also what they’re willing to pay. It can be a good indicator of a niche’s profitability and also showcase the breadth of potential product options of what’s currently selling. Knowing these details makes it easier to judge if you can be competitive.

3. Forums

Google your subject + the word ‘forum’ – this will give you a list of online forums relating to your topic. These can be a goldmine for ideas & background information on your niche. Knowing how to find your potential customers, knowing what they’re talking about, and knowing what they wish they had can create the perfect storm of opportunity. The key is to listen – what are their basic need? What problem might you be able to help them solve? What would make them feel good?

TIP: Keep track of the forums you find that relate to your potential niche – they’ll come in handy later on.

4. Google Trends

While some people like them, large sites like Google Trends often find the bulk of their top results relate to current events. However, you can see the top searches for each date individually and may be able to spot emerging trends this way.

5. Shopping.com

The Shopping.com Consumer Demand Index (CDI) catalogues millions of searches every week at Shopping.com. Here you can view the top 100 searches for each of the Shopping.com categories. This is a massive index, updated every two weeks.

Don't Write This Ebook

Would it surprise you to know that there are many ways to create an ebook without actually writing much of the content yourself? It’s true. One example would be to conduct a set of interviews and then compile the responses into ebook format.

In a nutshell, you would choose a topic, create a set of questions, email them to a group of experts, compile the responses, possibly find some suitable photos to accompany the information, and then publish it as an ebook. You could immediately begin selling it on Clickbank, eBay, Amazon, Lulu, your own website, etc.

To illustrate, your theme might be Wildlife Photography. You could email respected photographers asking for their advice on a specific technique or aspect of photography. Once you generate enough responses, you can compile them into ebook format.

In exchange for permission to publish their answers, offer the contributors an opportunity for self-promotion. It’s up to you how much space to give them but generously positioning them as experts encourages their contribution and usually enhances the perceived value of the book. At the very least you might want to offer a link to their website, a summary biography, contact info, and maybe a photo.
